Bury Port Yacht and Sub Aqua Club

We are a small, friendly club in a pleasant setting overlooking Burry Port Marina in Carmarthenshire and the lovely North Gower coast. Access to the sea is via the Burry Inlet which opens into Carmarthen Bay on the south coast of Wales.

The club was formed in 1963 and, in 1970, it merged with the Burry Estuary Angling and Boating Club retaining the title of Burry Port Yacht Club. The club logo is a Welsh hat with crossed hatchets. The hatchets were the weapons used by the notorious "Gwyr y Bwelli Bach" (men of the little hatchets) who looted ships wrecked on the nearby Cefn Sidan sands in the 18th and 19th centuries in particular.

The present clubhouse, which was built almost entirely by the members was completed in 1977. It has a licensed bar and provides social and other facilities for the members. Club opening hours in the summer are 17.00 to 23.00 on weekdays and 12.00 to 23.00 at weekends. Winter hours are 19.00 to 23.00 on weekdays and 12.00 to 15.00 and 19.00 to 23.00 at weekends. There is a good sized boat park at the rear with some provision for boat repair and maintenance.

Contact is via the Club Secretary Rob Williams tel. 01554 835990 or email Hon. Sec.

The club is in Carmarthenshire's Millennium Coastal Park with its 16 miles of landscaped parkland. Nearby is Pembrey Country Park and the 7 mile long Cefn Sidan beach which has enjoyed Blue Flag status for some years.

Burry Port Harbour, which was originally referred to as Pembrey New Harbour, was constructed between 1830 and 1832 to handle the great demand for coal for the Industrial Revolution. It was a replacement for Pembrey Old Harbour which, because of its size and constant silting problems, could not cope with the demand. It has seen many changes over the years culminating in the creation of a marina which was officially opened in 2004.

Mumbles Motor Boat Fishing Club

The MMBFC was formed in the early 1950's and at the time the premises were half a boat on the promenade.  The purpose of the Club then was to promote and facilitate the sport of sea angling from motorboats and shore in the Mumbles and surrounding areas.  That is still the main purpose of the Club along with providing fishing competitions, courses and talks related to boating, fishing and safety.

The Club has a twin engined catamaran which can take out 12 anglers and two crew on fishing trips around Swansea Bay and Gower.

The Clubhouse is at Pier Road, Mumbles and members are most welcome to come down and make use of the facilities, talk to experienced sea anglers, book for the fishing competitions and fishing trips on Oystercat, the Club boat.

Hopefully, the following pages will be your guide to a good day's fishing in the sea at Mumbles and the surrounding areas.  As well as online news for local fishing we offer hints, tips and guides to help you with your fishing, along with advice from some of the Club's top sea anglers.

Bury Port Boat competition successful day out for all Anglers

Have placed a post on the sea angling Ireland website, boat angling section, http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bulletin%20board/viewforum.php?f=5. They only allow a certain amount of space so could not say all that I wanted.

Fished the Burry Port Open as a guest of SWWASAC Chairman Alan Duthie, and Burry Port Yacht Club Commodore, Denis Davies. Burry Port is a fishing village close to Llanelli, an hours drive from Pembroke Dock. The fishing grounds are in Carmarthen Bay with Bass, Smooth Hound, Bull Huss, Various Rays, Flatfish, and Black Bream the main species targeted. Tope are plentiful but were not included in this competition. Prizes were based on the best species as a percentage of the specimen weight as determined by the Burry Port club.

120 anglers fished what was a very well run festival. Burry Port Yacht club was the headquarters, with bacon butties available first thing, and "Anglers Corner" tackle shop from Llanelli supplying bait and terminal tackle on the quay. Fishing marks in the bay varied from sandy shallow channels barely ten foot deep to rough ground in sixty to eighty foot of water. Tides were not too strong, although the shallow inshore grounds were interspersed with sand bars that the swell broke over, and these areas had to be avoided.

Due to the inshore grounds drying out at low tide the competition was fished over ten hours from 08.30am - 18.30pm. Fished landed included Bass to 10.50 lbs, Ray, Smooth Hound, Black Bream, Gurnard, Turbot, Black Sole (2.lbs+), and Dogfish. Bites were frequent and Mackerel were plentiful for bait. Local angler Mike Huish won first prize with a Bass of 10.50lbs, and for his efforts won £1000.00 sterling, part of a £2500.00+ prize fund. This competition is well worth entering, a warm welcome is assured, contact Bob Hockey; Ph: 0044(0)7817395710, http://www.burryportyachtclub.co.uk.
